Apple iPhone fanboys wet themselves with excitement this afternoon after witnessing the release of the newest addition to the Apple smartphone family- the….wait for it…..wait for it… iPhone 5! Unique name isn’t it?

The completely “original” iPhone is fully equipped with everything we were already aware of.  From the glass and aluminum cases,  to the pricing, to the 8 hour battery life, iPhone 5 is an obvious relative of  the iPhone 4S. With that being said, the iPhone 5 does include some interesting but similar features and specs which differentiate the smartphone from its “older brother” the iPhone 4s.

Apple iPhone 5 now includes ultra fast 4G LTE wireless connectivity and a single chip for voice, data and radio. The revamped iPhone jumps from an A5 to an A6 , which will double the performance of the phone. Complete with a 4″ screen, the iPhone 5 is 20% lighter and 18% thinner than the iPhone 4S. The thinner, sharper smartphone has a 326 ppi retina screen display and 1136 x 640 resolution. With full sRGB rendering the phone has 44% better color saturation. Along with the display, iPhone 5 now includes 5 rows of app icons instead of 4, along with the usual 4 shortcuts. Old applications will run letterboxed with black borders on either side so the display is centered. All first party apps have been optimize; Specifically, the calendar app, which now features a 5 day work week…WOW!

One feature I actually am pretty thrilled about is the camera. The upgraded camera boasts an 8 megapixel sensor, backside illumination, a Hybrid LR filter, five element lens, and F/2.4 aperture. A sapphire lens crystal cover helps make the camera more durable and photos clearer. Twenty five percent smaller than its predecessors, the camera is able to capture images 40% faster, includes a new image processor to reduce noise, and introduces “smart filter” for better color-matching. The camera also can be switched to 28 megapixel panorama mode. Even better than the back camera, the front facing camera has now improved to 720p!

Get ready for some more cutting -edge features…..” Lightning” and “Earpods”! The reversible new connector, “Lightning” is 80% smaller than the original connector, “Thunderbolt”. With hopes of wireless charging being out the window,  Apple said it is working with accessory makers like Bose and Bang & Olufsen, which will integrate “Lightning” into their products. The “Earpods”? They are simply a rebranded version of the “Earbuds” making those long commutes listening to your favorite musician more comfortable.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to pay via iPhone 5 using NFC, but we will be able to share our photos. With a few taps, Shared Photostream makes it easy to share and push out pictures to friends and family. Besides sharing photos, you will also be able to share the new iCloud tabs from your desktop to your phone. There will also be a new “VIP” tab within the mail feature, where all important emails will go directly.

Our old friend Siri has been updated slightly as well. All applications will now be launched by voice, making her an even more efficient personal assistant. Facebook statuses can now be updated by voice also and you can instantly send an SMS or iMessage if you are not able to take a phonecall. For all of you video chat lovers, Facetime can now be used over cellular networks. The question is what carriers?
